Daewoo
In 2001 General Motors decided to buy most of Daewoo Motor’s assets to form GM Daewoo. The new company started operations in 2002. GM Daewoo had the design, engineering, research and development facilities that were involved in various GM Products. The design center was moved to a new building in South Korea and assigned the task of designing a new SUV based on the Theta automobile platform.
GM Daewoo has manufacturing plants in Korea and an assembly plant in Vietnam and the cars were marketed all over the world. Daewoo was first sold around the world as the Daewoo LeMans or Pontiac LeMans and they were also known as the Daewoo Racer. In the 1990’s Daewoo expanded it presence under its own brand and was mostly in Europe. In 1995 Daewoo motors started producing cars for the UK and owned and operated their own retail network.
Daewoo Motor’s was acquired by General Motors in 2001. The new company was named GM Daewoo. GM Daewoo was responsible for designing and engineering various General Motors vehicles. They were assigned various engineering and development projects such as designing a SUV which was based on the Theta automobile platform and they were also responsible for versions of the General Motors Gamma Platform. Daewoo arrived in the UK in 1995 and was the only manufacturer at this time not using traditional dealerships. It owned and operated its own retail network.
In the 1990’s Daewoo got more exposure by have vehicles produce under their own name. The Daewoo automobiles were very popular, especially in Europe. Before they used their own brand name they were marketed all over the world as Daewoo LeMans, Pontiac LeMans and Daewoo Racer. The GM Daewoo Company had manufacturing plants in Korea. They also had an assembly plant in Vietnam and the vehicles from these operations were marketed all over the world.
