Mitsubishi is a Japanese car maker and part of a global conglomerate established in Japan in 1870 and closely tied to the development of that country as a modern nation. In Japanese, “Mitsu” means “Three” and “Bishi” means diamond – hence Three Diamonds and this is reflected in the company logo.
The company name means “Three Diamonds” in Japanese and this is reflected in the logo. The manufacturer is probably best known in the US market as the manufacturer behind the Lancer Evolution or “Evo” to its fans. This is the most popular high performance production car in the world today and combines a highly aggressive performance profile which is born from the company’s racing pedigree.
Mitsubishi started supplying cars to the US market in 1981 and has become an established player in the automobile industry worldwide. Blending performance with reliability and competitive pricing, the company has a range of vehicles which compete in all segments of the car market but perhaps the company name is better associated with the Lancer Evolution.
The Lancer Evolution or “Evo” to aficionados has been developed from the company’s motorsport racing pedigree and is probably the most popular, street legal high performance car available on the market worldwide. Many police forces have come to appreciate the high performance capabilities of this production car.
Mitsubishi Motors has long courted foreign alliances and Chrysler bought a significant stake in 1971 while in Europe the company had at that time, the largest manufacturing plant in the world jointly run with Volvo. Mitsubishi also shared research and development with Hyundai of South Korea and Proton of Malaysia.

The car maker has a lengthy history of making foreign alliances and was closely associated with Chrysler in the 1971 but this is by no means unusual. With Volvo, Mitsubishi operated the largest car manufacturing plant in the world in Holland during the 1980’s and had research and design sharing deals with Proton of Malaysia and Hyundai of South Korea. Exposure to the Asian market has meant that the manufacturer has been hit very hard by the downturn in car manufacturing.
